"Cross-section of a freshwater microbialite retrieved from the calcitic Mesquites River in the karstic Cuatro Cienegas Basin of Mexico.  This particular microbialite morphology can be termed an \"oncolite\".  Seen here is one that occurs unattached on the river bottom, possibly rolling downstream during high-flow events (such movement has not been observed directly).  These oncolites are formed via the calcium carbonate-precipitating actions of microbes, primarily cyanobacteria.  (Photograph by Dr. Jack D.
